preceptorshipPreceptorship Training

The overall aim of preceptorship training to improve awareness of the preceptor program plus show the benefits to all parties involved. From there, we would look to improve communication skills and personal development.

This outline is for two day program which can be expanded to meet any of your specific needs.

Day 1

Introduction to Preceptorship
This session will contain a mixture of presentation and group work and will enable delegates to explore the following:

•    What is preceptorship?
•    How is preceptorship different from mentorship/supervision?
•    What are the expectations of me as a preceptor? What is my role?
•    What are the benefits or preceptorship – to the preceptee and the preceptor?
•    What can I do that will really help my preceptee, what can I do that might hinder them?

Self Awareness & Learning
This session will provide delegates with an opportunity to develop their self awareness, so that they can understand their own preferred learning style, language styles, modes of communication and approach. They will then have an opportunity to explore the potential learning styles and approaches of their preceptees, and the impact this may have. Themes will include:

•    What are learning styles and why are they important?
•    Identifying my own and others learning styles
•    Adapting my approach to suit others
•    Applying other skills to enhance learning, behavioural flexibility.
•    Applying coaching skills to improve development
•    Personal organisation

This will be a very practical session, where delegates will have an opportunity to experience the topics above through group work, activities and exercises.

Day 2

This day will focus on two key areas; building effective relationship with the preceptee, and developing the preceptee so they can reach their full potential. Topics that will be explored during the day include:

•    Developing and maintaining rapport – pacing, matching, leading
•    Recognising beliefs & values and their impact (Robert Dilts, neuro-logical levels)
•    Understanding drivers and motivators and their impact
•    Building confidence and esteem (particularly in relation to the transition from student to professional)
•    Listening effectively (active listening) and asking the right questions (non-violent communication)
•    The affect of the words we use – but, try, don’t, yet, and etc.
•    NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) - language skills, reframing, perceptual positioning
•    Effective goal setting (outcome thinking)

This session will contain a mixture of group discussion, syndicate work, group activities and presentations, and will be interactive and participative
